Holden is depressed most of the book. He has a different type of depression thought. Depression is mostly a overall extended bad feeling, things will make you feel better, but not like they used to. The definition of depression is a mood disorder causing a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Holden has this, but he also doesn't find joy in what most others feel joy in. Holden often mentions things that make him depressed. Two that stood out to me were the amazing piano playing, and getting gifts. Holden said, "it made me sad anyway. Almost every time somebody gives me a present, it ends up making me sad." This shows that Holden doesn't find pleasure in things most people normally do. This could be because he feels that he isn't worth getting gifts for, as decreased self worth is a sign of depression. Another time that Holden shows how much he is depressed is how Holden mentions suicide. The only thing that stopped him was the fact that he didn't want people looking at his dead body. When Phoebe confronts Holden about what he likes Holden can only come up with two weak answers.
"'I like Allie,' I said. 'And I like doing what I'm doing right now. Sitting here with you and talking, and thinking about stuff, and-'"
